MUCU stands for 無垢(pure, innocent, immaculate), and the company advocates the philosophy of “deriving pleasure from good, unadulturated materials.” They produce ballpoint pens made out of iron, brass, bronze or aluminum – heavy bars of pure metal. I saw them at a local shop and was impressed with the look and the pleasing weight in the hand; however, when I researched them online, I found that there were complaints of the iron rusting. In any case the surfaces are left untreated and are not free of blemishes; you are supposed to enjoy the changing state of the material and care for it as you wish. The pen writes surprisingly well given the weight – maybe in part because the refills (made by Mitsubishi and Tombow) are good :)
